A Few Cool Finds
I've been learning d3, a javascript-based system for building interactive web visualizations, for the last few days. Took some time off from that to look over some examples.
Jason Davies has nice one called "The Music of Graphs" that's worth a look - it maps simple graphs (networks) to points along the pitch continuum via the eigenvalues of the graph's Laplacian matrix.
He has produced another nice one on Hilbert Curves which are a mapping from 1D to 2D that fill the plane and that preserve "closeness" -- points that are nearby in the 1D sequence are nearby in the 2D space. I've long pondered the "arrangement" of experience in the brain. Somewhere there is a mapping from something like a 1D sequence into a higher dimensional encoding. Another place we see something like this is in the translation of base pairs to 3D protein structure -- lots different among all these, but they tickle alike.
